First established as a railway village in the 1880s during the construction of the Edmonton-Calgary rail, Airdrie is a bedroom community a mere 6 kilometres north of the city of Calgary accessible by Highway 2, and is only 20 minutes from the Calgary International Airport.

The primary commercial area can be found along Main Street, and is anchored at each end with major shopping and commercial centres.

With over 570 acres of park land and 36 kilometres of paved multi-use pathways and trails, Airdrie residents have the opportunity to live in and enjoy the natural beauty of southern Alberta where the foothills meet the prairies. Popular recreational facilities include the Plainsmen and Twin Arenas; Genesis Place, which includes two field houses, a large gymnasium, a pool area, and an indoor running track; a large BMX track and club in Fletcher Park; and a wide range of outdoor athletic parks, sports fields, playgrounds and a splash park. The city has an excellent education system serving over 3,500 students with public, private, Catholic and French Immersion schooling options.
